We hope you're thinking of taking a drive out through the West MacDonnell Ranges and logging all the caches along the way. You don't need a 4WD to do this drive and most of the caches out here - the road is bitumen all the way to Tyler's Pass. This means you can visit Ellery Creek Big Hole, Ochre Pits, Ormiston Gorge, Glen Helen Gorge, and Redbank Gorge in any standard vehicle.

The West MacDonnell Ranges (or West Macs as we locals call them) stretch for over 200km west of Alice Springs. They’ve been made famous by the art of Western Arrernte artist, Albert Namatjira, the Larapinta Trail and amateur photgraphers from everywhere!

The West MacDonnell Ranges are a place to spend a week or a day exploring the many gaps, gorges, waterholes and just watching eye-popping scenery.

Point Howard is a scenic rest stop about 60km west of Alice Springs. You'll see fabulous views of the West MacDonnell Ranges to the east and west from this vantage point. Overnight camping is allowed here (FREE), and there is water and a picnic table as well.
