Moulamein has a cache, but there was nothing between Swan Hill & Moulamein. But now there is...This cache is near the Coonamit Bridge over the Wakool River, 30 klms from Swan Hill on the all sealed Moulamein road.
The Coonamit Bridge ( which is under repair work) was originally constructed in 1929. It is a Dare type timber truss road bridge. It has two timbertruss spans, each of 93 ft. There are 5 approach spans at one end and 2 at the other, giving the bridge an overall length of 420 ft. The superstructure is supported by timber trestles and provides a carriage way with a minimum width of 5.5 metres. The guard rail was of timber post and rail construction and extends the full length of the bridge.
Timber truss bridges, and timber bridges generally were so common, that NSW was known to travellers as the "timber bridge state."
Harvey Dare, the designer of Dare truss and other bridges was a leading engineer in the NSW Public Works Department in the early 20th century.
