FSC-2013 Tweeds Tavern

Cache Details:
This cache is located in Tweeds Park which shares the property with the Hockessin Athletic Center (HAC). The paths are dawn to dusk use only and are monitored by camera. Parking is available near the soccer fields across from Tweeds Tavern. Be careful not to park in areas reserved for HAC members only.

Follow the paved walking trail it is the direct route to the cache. There is no need to walk across the soccer fields or go bushwacking.
The cache container is a large ammo box with room inside for larger items.




Description:
In 1985 the Delaware Department of Transportation began looking into widening Route 7 because of fast urban growth in the Hockessin area. They discovered that one stucco house sitting at the corner of Route 7 and Valley road was listed as a log tavern dating back to the late 1700's. Del Dot began an intensive study into the log cabin. The cabin built around the mid 1790”s was originally owned by John Tweed and by 1799 was listed as a tavern. It continued to be operated as a tavern until around 1831 serving colonial era travelers.

As DelDot researched the building they learned that recent owners had encased the cabin in a larger cinder block/stucco building. In 2000 the state hired Duffield Associates to help with the move and reconstruction of the old building. A park was created almost across the street from the original location. Duffield worked closely with the newly formed Hockessin Historical Society and DelDot and the cabin was moved in pieces and recreated as it stood in the early 1800's.

Today it is only one of about 50 remaining log cabins of that era. The Hockessin Historical Society hopes to use the site for interpretive and interactive history lessons on life in that era.
