The cahce
The cache is about the size (but not the shape) of a butternut. Original contents: A log book and pen, a Snake Eye Comics sticker, a stuffed toy puppy and a toy soldier.
The location
The cache is placed on a large rock formation at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac in Ferndale, looking out onto a beautiful canopy of tree tops.
The story
Before the gold rush started in 1886, the land that would become Johannesburg stretched out in endless grasslands. It is now the largest man made forest in the world with approx. 6 million trees – 1.2 million planted on sidewalks and a further 4.8 million in private gardens. Johannesburg is also the largest city in the world that is not situated next to a large body of water (thanx Wikipedia).
(I heard on a TV show [Johnny Clegg’s County Imagined] that Johannesburg’s microclimate changed to subtropical because of all the trees that were planted, but I haven’t been able to find proof of this statement. Maybe I heard it wrong! Perhaps someone can clarify?)
