This month geocachers all over the world have been taking part in a challenge - to log at least one cache for each of the 31 days of August. Some have risen to the challenge and breezed through the month with relative ease while others have struggled to find enough caches close to home to qualify. Some will, by this point, have all 30 souvenirs on offer throughout the month, while others will have just one or two.
Whatever your level of achievement during this month this is the event for you. Timed at just before midnight it gives you the opportunity to log a cache for the last two of the 31 days at once. And what a selection we have for you on Coombe Hill! There's the oldest cache in England, there's an easy multi based on clues that can all be found at the monument, there's the YOSM (#224) or there's a brand new series of seven caches launched within the last month (starting here). And for those premium members that like a bit of a challenge there's the award winning Another Knight Cache not too far away.
What's more I will be bringing some homebaked cake with me, and I would encourage others to do the same. Parking is free and plentiful at the waypoint provided and the venue is dog and pushchair friendly.
- Where: Coombe Hill Monument, near Wendover, Buckinghamshire
- When: Friday 30th August, 11.50pm to Saturday 31st August, 12.10am with a Mexican Wave round the monument at midnight
- Who: Geocachers old and new, young and not so young, who are a bit mad and like an event with a difference
- Why: Because we can!
- How much: Parking is free as is access to the monument
Some important things to bear in mind:
- There is no street lighting either on the road approaching the car park, at the car park itself or at the monument. Everyone attending must bring their own torch.
- There is nowhere to shelter from the elements either in the car park or at the monument, and the monument itself is quite exposed. Wrap up warm and keep an eye on the weather forecast so you can prepare appropriately.
- The ground from the car park to the monument is uneven in places so appropriate footwear must be worn and please watch your step.
- There are houses near the car park and sound travels further at night so please keep the noise down and be respectful when arriving and leaving.
- The parkland in which the monument stands is used for grazing livestock so take special care if bringing children and keep dogs on a lead.
- The car park can be accessed by anyone at any time so do not leave valuables in your car and leave nothing on display.
Please post a will attend log in advance of the event so that I (and others) have an idea of how much cake to bring! A thermos or two wouldn't go amiss either!
