The Window, 1916

Henri Matisse (French, 1869-1954) The artist Henri Matisse wanted art to be “a calming influence on the mind,” just as a good armchair provides physical comfort. But, instead of painting an inviting room, he combined pattern, color, and line to soothe the mind. Relax a bit with the first painting by Matisse to enter a U.S. museum…at your DIA.

Welcome to Little Rabbit’s adventurous day. The park in which you stand is the home of Little Rabbit and just across the street is the home of Hamtramck City government. Here lately, looking across at City Hall, a new piece of art grabbed the eye of all who passed by including Little Rabbit and today the eye of a brightly colored butterfly. The butterfly had visited the park many times to play with Little Rabbit by flying about as Little Rabbit would hop around trying to keep up.

The two played around the park a for while when Butterfly took Little Rabbit over to City Hall and the masterpiece named The Fisherman’s Wedding Party with a small plaque with the letters DIA on it. Butterfly travels all around Hamtramck each day and has seen other art works around town with this same group of letters.

After spending time at the masterpiece at City Hall, Butterfly went off to the west with Little Rabbit hopping along behind. Butterfly flew and flew, Little Rabbit hopped and hopped along Yeman Street for some time before getting to another of the paintings that Butterfly had seen before, this one had the name Warrior with Two Pages, and it was attached to a building with a letters that said Polonia Polish Restaurant. Little Rabbit was so happy to see the art and seeing Little Rabbit hopping around in such delight, Butterfly lead Little Rabbit off to another of these art works around town.

The two headed west for just a little bit and came to the corner of a busy street. Turning north, the pair went to Polish Market where they found a painting with the name of Chevy and again the letters DIA. The sun was going down by now and Butterfly wanted Little Rabbit to make one more visit to Butterfly’s favorite painting in town, it was still a little farther from Little Rabbit’s home.

The two headed north just a short little bit and they arrived at a corner which two busy streets came together. Here they headed west again crossing the busy street. Little Rabbit was on one of the best adventures and the farthest ever from home that Little Rabbit had ever traveled. Arriving at Butterfly’s favorite painting, Little Rabbit could see happy people big and small coming out of a building. What a fun place to be! The two went in to see why everyone had smiles on their faces. Butterfly and Little Rabbit found a place with many more adventures all in one place.

Time past and the two were having so much fun they did not realize that everyone had left. Where did they go? Wanting to see if they all went outside, the pair found they had been left behind. Little Rabbit was feeling very tired and went to an area marked “Reference.” Here they found a nice place to rest and soon they each had fallen asleep. It is now time for you to visit the place where Little Rabbit and Butterfly found a nice place to sleep.
