Talking Oak, 1857

William Maw Egley (English, 1826 – 1916) The artist was inspired by a poem by Alfred Lord Tennyson. In it, Olivia confides her heartsickness for a young man to an old oak tree—and the tree falls in love with her. The artist’s vivid details make everything look so true to life that the story feels entirely plausible. See every blade of grass and knot in the tree in the real painting …at your DIA.
