This beautiful little harbor was named when a flock of pigeons were driven into the water and floated ashore during a severe storm back in colonial times. This is a natural harbor and has been used for commercial fishing for over 350 years. From about 1830 to the 1930's it was also used to ship granite from the local quarrys to ports up and down the East Coast where Cape Ann granite helped build some of our greatest cities. It was during this 100 year period that the granite walls that you see today were built to further protect the harbor for the bigger granite schooners. There was also a railroad that hauled the granite from the Lanesville quarrys to the wharf. The cache is a small container but is big enough to host small travel bugs and coins. There is a small park nearby with picnic tables so bring a lunch and enjoy the view. Also, you can visit the image gallery for some more historical photos if you like.
