This EarthCache will take you to a rare outcrop site
of the unique "Tufts Quartzite",
found on the Tufts University campus.

Logging Requirements

To claim this EarthCache, visit the Tufts Quartzite outcrop to do your fieldwork,
and then E-mail me or Message me the answers to all the following questions.

Questions
Q1: At least ninety (90) percent of a quartzite rock is made of what mineral?
Q2: What is the unique name of the local metamorphic bedrock of this area which is considered to be the origin of this even more metamorphic "Tufts Quartzite"?
Q3: Examine and describe in your own words on what does "Tufts Quartzite" look like, in terms of color, texture, formation, hardness, etc.
Q4: Standing back, and looking at your compass or map, in which compass direction do you think the sedimentary layers have been tilted 'downwards' towards to, and at approximately what degree tilted from the horizon at zero degrees?
Q5: How old are these deposits?
Q6: From your observation, debate in your own words on how or why "Tufts Quartzite" is unique.
Q7: Locate the entire Tufts Quartzite formation within this online geological map of Massachusetts, and also referencing Google Maps’s online 'Measure distance' feature, and estimate the maximum horizontal (on-the-ground) width & length of this rare formation area.

Post a picture of your GPS and/or any part of your body, with this Tufts Quartzite outcrop in the background.

Parking
Free day-time visitor parking is available in the Jackson Lot. Look for the colorful "GALLERY PARKING" banners off Lower Campus Road. Park at the rear of the lot, between the two Arts Center signs. Refer to Additional Waypoints below. Parking is limited to two hours here. Parking is also free (and no pass is needed) after 5 pm on weekdays, all day during weekends, and during special daytime events in the lots surrounding the Aidekman Arts Center, off Lower Campus Road.
