Credit River - Shipwreck Series

Meyers III
January 24, 1987

There are many shipwrecks around the world. Some very famous and others not so. Each however has it’s own story to tell. As you travel along the Credit River doing this series of caches, we have highlighted a number of these shipwrecks. During low water levels on these parts of the Credit River, you need to be careful in a canoe or kayak so as you don’t wind up in your own shipwreck. Besides the many large rocks along the way, there are also some other obstacles such as dams which should be avoided. All of the geocaches in this series have been placed by tubing, inflatable boat or on foot by walking in the water along the Credit River. Whichever way you choose to search for these caches, use caution and common sense.

Meyers III
The Meyers III shipwreck is placed in memory of my husband's 4 cousins who lost their lives when their fishing boat sank off of the southwestern coast of Newfoundland. On January 24, 1987 the Meyers III, an inshore dragger, was making only its second winter fishing trip of the season when a storm with gale force winds came out of nowhere. The 45 foot boat with a full load of fish could not withstand the 80 knots per hour winds and began to take on water, eventually sinking the boat only a 10 minute steam from the Codroy Warf. All five fishermen were lost, this cache is in memory of; David, Clarence, Jim and Joseph Meyers (all brothers) from Bartletts Harbour and Ewen Hynes from Reefs Harbour. For more information on this tragedy go to youtube Land & Sea 1988:The Loss of the Meyers III.
