This series is based on my favorite book series, A Song of Ice and Fire, by George R. R. Martin. It is a series of epic fantasy novels containing a myriad of characters, political intrigue, fantastic battles, magic, and, of course, dragons. The first book is titled A Game of Thrones, which is also the name of the TV series on HBO that is based on these novels. This geocache series will highlight the characters from the series.
“The Targaryens are the blood of the dragon, …their heritage proclaimed in a striking (some say inhuman) beauty, with lilac or indigo or violet eyes and hair of silver-gold or platinum white.” This is the line that conquered both dragons and the Seven Kingdoms, the first rulers of the realm. They are said to have the blood of dragons within them, which explains their ability to ride and rule dragons, and makes a true ruler incapable of being burned by fire.
Daenerys, a maid of thirteen years of age and strikingly beautiful, is daughter of Mad King Aerys Targaryen and sister to Viserys. When her father was killed and the kingdom seized by the rebels, Danerys and her brother were spirited away over the sea to live in secret with allies. At the age of thirteen, Viserys made a deal with a barbarian horselord, Khal Drogo, to give Daenerys to him in marriage in exchange for 40,000 warriors to help Viserys reclaim the Seven Kingdoms. Daenerys grew to love her new husband, and embraced their culture, learning the language, customs, and how to rule.
When Daenerys loses her husband, in her grief, she places herself in the pyre with him, along with three dragon eggs she had been given as a gift. When the fire finally burns down, Daenerys emerges from the embers unharmed, with three newly hatched dragons, the first dragons in centuries. She now knows she possesses the blood of the dragon, and is meant to rule. She embarks on her quest to conquer an army so that she may return to the Seven Kingdoms and reclaim her throne as the “Mother of Dragons”.
I wanted to place a cache on the bridge over Mott Lake, but I had to make due with this one. (It’s almost on the bridge.) Take a moment to enjoy the view. I’ve always thought this was a nice walk. It should be an easy find. Parking is available at the Genesee Veterans Park, just south of the cache. Bring an extraction tool, and please abbreviate when you sign the log.
