Geocache Description:

Some history of the Illawarra featuring a monument to the local miners federation.

Coal mining has always been a feature of the Illawarra’s history, from the first discovery of coal in Australia at Coalcliff to the worst industrial disaster in Australia’s history and some of the longest and most bitter strikes and pickets to even working on after been sacked and the mine closed.

Many of today’s working conditions were forged by the men who went down in the pits, to mine the black diamonds, some not returning, and still today the area boasts miners and a fine heritage of pride and strength in solidarity.

Through all this the miner’s federation has looked after the welfare of these people and this monument documents their history from its early beginnings of looking out for the miner’s rights, up until the present day. There is also a time capsule here abouts, so find the cache and read up on a bit of the local mining history as well.

The cache is a larger micro.

Happy hunting.
