Geocache Description:

Tintern Abbey is a very well known and picturesque ruin. Over the centuries there have been many water wheel powered mills along the river. The only mill buildings left now are those at the old abbey mill. This was a sawmill and water powered up the 1950's when electricity took over. The mill continued in operation right into the 1970's. The waterwheel has been fully restored and is back in operation. The very fast Angiddy stream comes down past the mills and was the source of the power for the wheels. Further up the valley you'll find the ruins of the foundries and wire works for which Tintern is also well known. The buildings at abbey mill are now shops and a restaurant but much of the industry has been preserved and information boards at the site tell you all about the history of the mills. You may use the free car park nearby but please don't park here if you're planning on doing any other caches or walks nearby as it is for customers only. The car park is locked from about 5pm (4:30pm in winter) to 10am. The cache is not within the site but can easily be reached from the Wye Valley footpath running beside it as it goes out over the iron bridge across the river. We'd like to thank the owners of abbey mill for permission to place the cache and for providing a great first to find prize in the cache.
