Geocache Description:

Went driving around and noticed they were getting ready for some softball at the ball fields and so pulled in and watched them get setup.  Decided to go hiking into the recreational area behind the ball fields where they have daytime camp sites.  It was a really nice day to hike around the trails they have back there.

Noyes Slough is an overflow channel of the Chena River that exists entirely within the Fairbanks city limits. It is about 7 miles in length. In summer months, the slough is used by canoeists and much of the migrating waterfowl. During the winter, the Noyes Slough freezes over an additional roadway used by many of the cross-country skiers, snowmachiners and snowshoers, as well as the dog mushers. It is also part of the annual Open North American Sled Dog Championship and the Iron Dog snowmobile race, both end in downtown Fairbanks.

Noyes Slough is named after Fred Noyes, he ran the Tanana Mill on the slough before Fairbanks was even discovered. The first mention of the name appears in a 1905 mining district map.

The Noyes Slough was also coined Deadman's Slough when in 1907 Vuko Perovich was killed and found floating in the slough.

Today you can take in the history and observe the waterfowl in the summer and take advantage of the many groomed trails available.  One that has gained popularity is Deck #5 where you can hold events and grill up some burgers and dogs and enjoy the beautiful suroundings.

The cache contains a variety of trinkets and a pretty nifty FTF.

Certain times of the year there have been mention of bees around the deck.  One gal actually got stung so be careful and aware. If you are allergic to bees then bring your Bee Sting Kit!
