Geocache Description:

35mm pot - log only

The cache has been placed at one end of a footpath that passes behind Charlton House where Sir Henry Bessemer, the Victorian entrepreneur and inventor of the convertor for making steel was born in 1813.  As you walk through Charlton village, a Blue Plaque records this on Charlton House, opposite the pub (no longer active).  The lane that passes beside the GZ is Mill Lane, and there is a ruined windmill in the garden of the house at the top of the lane, one of about 15 mills (water and wind) in the Hitchin area. The cache is hidden at the entrance to the path down low. It replaces a snail cache which seems to have gone walk-about, or been taken by a thrush or muggle. While searching you are likely to be visited by some friendly horses who only want a stoke. You can park close by, but the road is narrow and close to a blind bend, so take care with children.  Due to its position it is not really stroller or wheelchair friendly.
