There are many really interesting place names in Britain, some of which have their counterparts in the US (though frequently pronounced differently), and quite a few that are unique. Each place name has a history and an origin of its own, that will have colored those who live there. There may be a church there with bells to ring out across the fields, or a manor house with its associated gentry and servants, or just a farm with the rustic fields defining the landscape. Sadly, in some cases there is just a name on the map to remember the past. The more unusual names often have a certain quirkiness to them and for a number of reasons the following place names seem to stick in my mind. See if you can find a reason for this list.
Elmstone Hardwicke Long Crendon
Fisherton de la Mere Basingstoke -1
Bishop's Itchington Clynnog Fawr
Hucknall Torkard Grundisburgh
Ashby Parva Piddletrenthide
Holton cum Beckering Gressenhall
Nempnett Thrubwell Stonham Aspal
Saffron Walden
It was pointed out to me that there has been a change at one of the places since the publication of this puzzle, so there is a small adjustment noted above that is necessary in order to obtain the correct number needed for this puzzle.
