ToritoribenoYorozu, he willed to be the guard of the emperor, was retainer of MononobenoMoriya. But the situation was changed and the MononobenoMoriya was defeated by the emperor, also Yorozu was attacked by the emperor's soldger. This was quite against his will and he forced to kill himself in the deep disappointment.
The emperor ordered to tear the body of Yorozu to eight part and expose to the people. But suddenly the thnderstorm comes and the white dog kept by Yorozu appeared and rush to the emperor's soldger kept away from his master's body. After that the dog bite the Moriya's head and run away. The dog found the old tomb(Kofun) and dig a hole and bury it. Then the dog lie on the side and kept his master till he was dead from hunger.
The emperor heared this story after that, very impressed and oedered to build the momument of Yorozu and his dog.
The name of Moriya was introduced by the book “The Nobility of Failure, Tragic Heroes in the History of Japan” written by Ivan Morris and this book inspiered Edward Zwick to make the movie “Last Samurai”.

日本書紀に捕鳥部萬(とりとりべのよろず）の記載があります。
彼は物部守屋の家臣であったが、西暦587年蘇我馬子が炊屋姫（後の推古天皇）の詔を受けて守屋を滅ぼした際、単身彼の妻の地元であるこの地に逃れてきた。追討軍に囲まれ、「萬は天皇の楯として、その勇をあらわそうとしたが、聞いて頂けず、かえってこの窮地に追い込まれてしまった。共に語るに足る者は来い。自分を殺そうとするのか捕らえようとするのか聞きたい」と叫んだと伝えられている。しかし遂に覚悟を決め、自らの太刀を怪力で砕き小刀で頚を刺し自刃した。朝廷は萬の遺体を八つ裂きにしてさらし者にせよと命じたのでそのようにすると、どこからとも無く萬の飼い犬であった白い犬が現れ、萬の亡骸の周囲を何度も回ると天に向かって吼えた。そして嵐と共に萬の首を食いちぎると頭をくわえて持ち去り、古い墓を掘り出して埋めた。その後白犬は傍らに横たわり、朝廷の兵が近寄ると歯をむきうなり声を上げて追い払った。白犬はその場を一歩も動かず、遂には飢え死にした。この報告を受けた朝廷は深く感銘し、萬と犬の墓を作るように命じた。
これらの墓は、現在大山大塚古墳（天神山２号墳）と義犬塚古墳（天神山１号墳）として現存します。
萬の名前はアイヴァン・モリスの著書で紹介され、この本がエドワード・ズウィックのラスト・サムライ製作に影響を与えたそうです。
