Geocache Description:

You are seeking a short two stage multi cache that begins at a monument to the Sons of Old France.

The monument, located near a very busy place in Sault Ste. Marie, commemorates those who in the earliest years of exploration of the northland, passed through this place. Mentioned on the monument are the Voyageurs, the Coureurs de Bois, and the other Gallant Sons of Old France.

The Voyageurs were mostly French Canadians who engaged in the transportation of furs by canoe during the fur trade era. Voyageur is a French word, which literally means "traveler". The emblematic meaning during the time of the fur trade included being a part of a licensed, organized effort or company, one of the distinctions that set them apart from the Coureur des Bois.

The Coureur de Bois were those who engaged in the fur trade in ways that were considered to be outside of the mainstream. In the fur trade era this meant circumventing the normal channels by going deeper into the wilderness to trade, or by trading without permission from the French authorities when such permission was required.
