Geocache Description:

A geocache next to the Old Yellowstone Trail.

On October 9th of 1912, a grassroots organization was formed as an advocate for a good road across the northern states. At the time called the "Twin Cities - Aberdeen - Yellowstone Park Trail Association", the name was shortened in 1915 to just the Yellowstone Trail Association. Their motto was "A Good Road From Plymouth Rock to Puget Sound." They even completed improvements to the first 100 miles of road before the end of 1912. Initially financed by donations, the group pushed for public funding at both the local and national level.

The same year, 1912, The National Old Trails Road Ocean-to-Ocean Highway Association was formed to create a highway along the old national trail from Washington DC to Los Angeles. The idea of interstate highways took off and in 1913 a Lincoln Highway group started for a route from New York to San Francisco. Soon other groups formed supporting other roads included the Old Spanish Trail (Florida to California), the Jefferson Highway (Winnipeg to New Orleans), the Dixie Highway (Chicago to Miami), and many more .

The Yellowstone group helped push for improved public roads and printed route brochures for travelers. The Yellowstone trail ended up being pieced together largely from existing good roads and was the first coast-to-coast route that was entirely across the northern part of the United States. Small sections of the route still remain. The road here is one small section of that old route.
