Geocache Description:

History of the old Duch Reform Church on the corner of Gerrit Maritz street and Van Riebeeck avenue.

The stands for the church were bought in 1920, five stands at 50 Pounds and two stands at 75 Pounds. In 1925 it was decided to build a church hall that can accommodate 400 people.

On the 9th April 1927 the cornerstone was laid and building started. The hall was finished on the 27th October 1927.

The hall was used as a church until 1937. On 1st January 1937 it was decided to collect money to build the church.

It was estimated that the church would cost 10 000 Pounds without the clock and the organ.

On 30th April 1938 the cornerstone was laid by Ds W.C.O. du Toit. The church would accommodate 853 seats and another 270 on the gallery. A very valuable German organ was donated by Mrs. Sannie Louw and her two daughters valued at 12 000 Pounds.

The debt for the church was very high and they asked each member to contribute an extra 4 Pounds per year towards the debt.

During December 1938, with the 1838 “Great Trek” commemoration festivities, ox wagons started a journey from the church, to the Voortrekker Monument at Pretoria. The tracks have been permanently laid in cement and is still there. The cornerstone of the Voortrekker Monument was also laid then.

The pictures I used are from "Gedenkboek van die Ossewaens op die pad van Suid-Afrika – Eeufees 1938", Dirk Mostert. Nasionale Pers Bpk Kaapstad. 1940. p753-755.

The cache is a camo micro at the corner of the premises. It is accessible from the outside and you don’t have to enter the grounds.

Warning: There is a road closure behind the church, but you can walk.
