There are two distinct types of character that populate Lewis' stories: Humans originating from Earth, and Narnian creatures created by Aslan. Most of characters from Earth serve as the protagonists of the various books, although some are only mentioned in passing. In creating the fantasy creatures, Lewis did not limit himself to a single source of inspiration. Instead, he borrowed from many sources including Greek, German, and Celtic literature.
Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien (The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings) were close friends. Both served on the faculty at Oxford University, and both were active in the informal Oxford literary group known as the "Inklings." It has been said that said that if it hadn't been for the friendship between Tolkien and Lewis, the world would likely never have seen The Narnia Chronicles, The Lord of the Rings, and much else.
