Geocache Description:

On the stormy night of June 1, 1999, American Airlines Flight 1420, flying from Dallas-Ft. Worth, attempted a landing at Little Rock National Airport. High crosswinds and low visibility at the airport complicated matters, but the pilots chose to land instead of aborting. During their rush to land as soon as possible, both pilots became overloaded with multiple necessary tasks. That led to errors and omissions, which proved to be the final links that resulted in the crash. The plane touched down but, due to the errors made by the pilots during the landing that negated the braking features of the aircraft, it failed to stop. It skidded off the far end of the runway at high speed, slammed into a steel walkway with the landing lights for runway 22L and finally came to a stop on the banks of the Arkansas River. Of the 145 people aboard, the captain and ten passengers were killed in the crash.

Six of the ten passengers who perished were from Russellville and the surrounding area, all members of the same tour group that had spent two weeks in the British Isles. This park was dedicated two years later, on June 1, 2001, in memory of those six residents. Their names may be found on the plaque on the wall near the plaza's main entrance. The park features six benches covered by a curved arbor and flanked by evergreen trees. The benches face a bronze sculpture of a young boy and girl reaching skyward with doves. Six fountains at the base of the sculpture spray water at varying angles to represent the personalities of the victims.

I suggest you take a few minutes to sit down here and enjoy the fountain and the plaza, and remember those who perished.
