Tai Hang was originally a traditional Hakka village on Hong Kong Island with over 100 years of history. Tai Hang was literally named after a "big pit" passing through this area from Mount Butler into the sea. The existing Tung Lo Wan Road was actually the coastline at that time. Today, Tai Hang has developed into a modern community. The emerging new restaurants and shops form an interesting contrast with the old shops in the region.

It is said that the village was attack by a plague in 1880. To drive out the plague, villagers made a fire dragon with joss sticks and paraded it through the neighborhood, setting off firecrackers at the same time on the day of Mid-Autumn Festival. The plague ended after the event. Since then, the villagers perform a fire dragon dance for three consecutive nights in the Mid-Autumn Festival every year to pray for safety and peace.
Nowadays the Tai hang Fire Dragon Dance is organized by the "Tai Hang Residents' Welfare Association, which recruits dancers around July every years. All those who take part have to receive extensive training before the event.
