Geocache Description:

You are seeking a short two stage multi cache that begins at the cenotaph in front of the courthouse.

In front of the Sault Ste. Marie District Courthouse stands a cenotaph; a monument to the soldiers from the Algoma area that died fighting wars in foreign lands; World War I, World War II, the Korean War and Afghanistan.

The central bronze sculpture depicts War as a crouching male under a 'Shield of Right' represented by a draped female holding a sword and a sprig of maple leaves. The central monument has two side panels. The first depicts men reluctantly answering the call to arms. The second panel shows soldiers helping the wounded. Engraved on three sides of the monument are the names of those that gave their lives.

In 1924 or 1925 the citizens of Sault Ste. Marie had the cenotaph erected. The design was by Alfred Howell. Mr. Curan, the publisher of the local newspaper, the Sault Daily Star, wrote to Mr. Rudyard Kipling and asked if he would write a suitable verse to be inscribed on the cenotaph.

Kipling, a noted author of the period, had lost a son in the war, and penned the following in response to Curran's request.

From little towns, in a far land, we came,
to save our honour and a world aflame;
by little towns, in a far land, we sleep,
and trust those things we won
to you to keep.

To locate the final for this multi cache, gather information from the cenotaph.
