We are naming this cache in honor of a rare small, 2-foot Kemp's Ridley sea turtle we met when we were hiding this cache. As we were looking for a site to hide this cache, a young family was fishing and this turtle took their bait and the fishhook got caught in its lower jaw. We called FL Fish and Wildlife and others, but they were all short-handed and were unable to assist us. They did assure us that the hook would rust out in about 6 weeks and the turtle would be okay as long as he could open his mouth to eat. Since we could not be sure he could fully open his mouth and it is illegal to keep these turtles, it was decided to take the turtle to the Gulfarium. Even though we never saw the turtle again, we will always be reminded of him whenever we visit this small park.
This is one of the newest parks in Ft. Walton Beach. It was a hangout for homeless and addicts, so the city decided to clean the area up and try to save the shoreline from washing away due to boat traffic. They built a small fishing pier, a nice sidewalk with benches, tables and even added lights and steps into the water. Although it is not a place we would recommend swimming at, it does provide a nice place to watch boats go by and maybe put out a fishing line. Since there are usually some muggles around, please be careful to put the cache back as you found it.
