Geocache Description:

There is nothing hidden at the posted coordinates!

Follow the simple instructions in this description to find this letterbox.

Three summers ago I set off for a short hike with my brother Mr.S. Our destination was Matt's Fern Rock. Along the way we came across another massive rock by the trailside which, being brothers, I was immediately challenged to climb. Getting up to the top wasn't a problem and I was feeling a little proud about meeting the challenge. However, the ego boost did not last long. The slide down was far less successful and I ended up with a badly sprained ankle. This letterbox is hidden at the infamous "Ankle Sprain Rock." CLIMBING THE ROCK IS NOT NECESSARY OR RECOMMENDED!

Letterbox Instructions:

Step 1 - Park your car close to the posted coordinates. There is ample parking nearby. Please park closer to the trailhead than to the restaurant if possible. Depending on your vehicle, it may be possible to drive further up the trail. However, it is a nice walk. Enjoy it!

Step 2 - Proceed 1/3 of a mile up the trail/road and look for a sign marking the border of State Forest Land. You are following the F.X.Matt trail which is open to the public for hiking in the summer and snowmobiling in the winter. The trail begins by passing through private property but once you see the sign you are on public land.

Step 3 - Walk about 150 feet further up the trail until you see a very large rock to your left. It will be the biggest rock you have seen so far on the walk. You can't miss it! You might see a gate and stop sign in the distance. If you reach the gate you have gone way too far.

Step 4 - Proceed to the back of the rock where you will find a well concealed lock-n-lock hidden at the base.

This is a letterbox style geocache. Included in the geocache is a stamp and ink pad in a separate lock-n-lock container. DO NOT REMOVE THESE ITEMS FROM THE GEOCACHE. Use them to stamp your own collection if you are so inclined, and stamp the logbook yourself if you have your personal stamp with you.

This cache was set following the DEC guidlines Part 190: Use Of State Lands.

"1. a geocache that is labeled with the owner's name and address and installed in a manner that does not disturb the natural conditions of the site or injure a tree;"

Have fun! Be safe!
