Geocache Description:

The upland sandpiper has been classified as endangered in Washington State since 1981. A recovery program has been in place since 1995. They have been sighted in eleven eastern Washington counties, but confirmed nesting sites have been at Stubblefield Lake at the Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge near Cheney and in the Spokane Valley.

Upland sandpipers are black, brown and white mottled in color. They have a long neck and tail. Their legs are yellowish. They have a small head with large dark eyes. They have a distinctive call. They nest in grassy areas. Their nest is a small depression in tall grass. They lay about four eggs. These birds winter in the pampas grass areas of southern South America. The majority winter in Argentina. The decline in population is due to over hunting since the early 1900s. This cache is located at Caliche Lakes south of George, Washington. Access the DFW parking lot from Frontage Road, not I-90. ***Congratulations to Mr. Gadget #2 for First To Find!***
