Zikes! It's a Flood! Traditional Cache

Take a stroll along the shady Todd River banks on your way to the Alice Springs Telegraph Station (caching central for Alice Springs!).

This odd looking structure is a very important part of the flood warning system that lets the town of Alice Springs know when the Todd River is likely to flood. The Todd River flows on average about 3-5 times per year, although in 2010 it flowed over a dozen times, whilst the previous year (2009) it didn't flow at all.

A flow of the Todd is an exciting time for all of us who live in Alice Springs - we'll all congregate on the river banks and watch the foamy, bubbly first flows of the water come down from the catchment further up on Bond Springs Springs. We'll stand on the causeways and feel the river flow over our bare feet. Most of the time however, the Todd is the big, broad dry river you're probably staring at now. The water, however, doesn't go away. You only need to dig 30cm or so down into the sand to find dampness, and a little more to have your own personal well.
