An American roulette wheel has the numbers 1 to 36, 0 and 00. They run clockwise around the wheel in the sequence: 0-28-9-26-30-11-7-20-32-17-5-22-34-15-3-24-36-13-1-00-27-10-25-29-12-8-19-31-18-6-21-33-16-4-23-35-14-2. Added together, their total led to the legend that the secrets of roulette can be had by treaty with the devil.
Bets are placed on any single number, a range of numbers or groups which include three "streets", first 12, second 12, third 12, red, black, odd and even.
The payout ratio for a win is set at (36-n)/n where n is the number of squares covered by the bet. The winning stake is returned to the player too. Thus, if there were only 36 numbers on the wheel and a player covered all of them, the game would be even and neither the player nor the house would ever profit. However, as there are 38 numbers on the wheel, the odds are not even and tip in favour of the house.
For numbers from 1 to 10 and 19 to 28, odds are red and evens are black. From 11 to 18 and 29 to 36, odds are black and evens are red. 0 and 00 are always green and never odd or even.
