Geocache Description:

Drinking Fountain and Trough


Please do not park at the junction as this is a very busy road.

Parking is at the entrance to Arran Industry Sand.

Waypoint Ref: PK4K5RZ  Parking  N 55° 35.098 W 005° 09.885

This cache is a 450ml cliplock container with Log book, pencil and swaps with room for TB’s and Geocoins.

At the foot of the String is a Drinking fountain and trough. The trough was used to water the horses before they made their journey up and over the string road.

Dated 1898. Drinking fountain and trough. Red sandstone, stugged and snecked to front, rubble to rear, ashlar dressings and copes. Piscina-type drinking fountain with dated canopy above, trough was fed from natural spring. Unfortunately not in use now.

Rosa Bridge

As you walk towards the Drinking Trough take a moment to admire the fine workmanship in the construction of the Rosa Bridge as you cross it.

Early 19th century. Road bridge over Rosa burn, 2 round-headed arches, widened to S. Stugged red sandstone, random rubble to N, coursed to S, 3 ashlar cut-waters to N, 1 to S with bull-faced base course, ashlar intrados with bull-faced basecourse, saddleback-coped parapets with segmental pediment to centre. 3 flood tunnels to E.
