Geocache Description:

This is an aviation related cache. It is situated at a prominent feature which may be used by pilots to navigate into Kirkenes Lufthavn, Høybuktmoen. The feature is required by international rules and regulations denoted in ICAO Annex 14 Chapter 6.

The starting point for this cache is called Kirkenes VOR and is the same coordinates as published with this cache. The coordinates for this navigation aid is however slightly adjusted from its exact position since distance is normally only given with one decimal in aviation navigation. This adjustment will improve the position accuracy of the cache. Kirkenes VOR is situated within the restricted area of Kirkenes Airport, but the cache is hidden well outside these premises.

The puzzle to find the location of this cache is;

                KIK R-257 D1.4

A VOR offers fairly accurate navigation capabilities for aviation, but might be insufficient for geocahing. At a distance of 60 nautical miles from the VOR the splay angle would result in an margin of error within an area of 0,1 square miles (0,35 square kilometers). The further away from the navigation aid you are the larger the margin of error, and of course the closer you are the margin of error decreases. This is referred to as Fix Tolerance in aviation. When arriving near the cache location the margin of error would be approximatly 50 meters, but if you have done your homework the exact location should be obvious.

The cache is available by foot during summer, but will require skis or snowshoes during winter.
