While noseying around the upper reaches of the Germasogiea reservoir, I just had to investigate this track described as 'The road to the waterfall' on Google Earth. On the way here from Foinikaria you pass an island in the reservoir with a little picnic site on top that some of you might have already visited
, you loop around a still lake lined with cypress trees where fishermen sit on weekends, a shallow beached area which attracts dragonflies, herons and of course frogs, and the remains of an old quarrying or mining site... and then we turn right up this little track.
I'd advise a 4x4 really, but it can be done in a saloon with caution, if you park by the mine it's about 500m to the cache up the track. Ploughing through bamboo forests taller than a car, between towering cliffs into a narrowing ravine with the sound of swift running water all year, this feels truly jurassic, until you get to the end where it goes all 20th century again.
This station is for measuring expected water input for the reservoir below. The water usually flows over the central section, as the river level rises it is forced outward by the cross section of the channel, this means some of it drops through the perforated grate on the far side into a tank below. There is a simple ballcock device inside which is connected to meters and gauges inside the little hut on the other side of the bridge, this tells the reservoir how much water to expect and to adjust outflow measures at the dam if necessary.
When I came here last the little hut had been broken open and you could see all the workings, it was quite fascinating, but it's all locked up safely now.
