The river almond at one time was heavily contaminated due to the number of industries in west Lothian that used it as an outfall. Thankfully those times have long since past and now the banks are rich in birdlife with mallards, moorhens, white-chested dippers and the Cramond swans.
A number of mills at one time were located along its length.. Cockle Mill, Fairafar Mill, Peggy's Mill, Dowie's Mill and Craigie Mill
The weir at Dowies Mill was refurbished in 1984 after being washed away in in the 1980’s and is close by as are the exposed mill stones.
Cramond Brig, where the original 15th century bridge stands is also just upstream.
The cache is on Dowies Mill Lane part way along the walkway – with the name of the cache being derived from a wall ornament close by.
The GPS coordinates are approximately 35m from the site as an accurate reading isn’t really possible under the tree cover.
