When PP sent Shunter a PM with a link to a newspaper article about the Law railway tunnel, and suggesting we put a cache there, we got googling, only to be disappointed when we discovered that both ends of the tunnel are now completely hidden. However, we did uncover enough information to find out where the railway did run.
The Dundee- Newtyle railway was the first railway built north of the Tay. It was begun in 1833, and although different sections of it closed at different times. It finally closed for good in the 1960s. The original route ran up through the town, splitting the site of the DRI in two, before running up to the Law through what is now the grassy strip running up this street. The stone wall in the foreground of the first photo is the remains of the wall of the railway line. If you turn round and look up the hill, following the line of the wall and fence, the house in the middle distance is where the southern end of the tunnel emerged. The black and white photograph shows the blocked up southern entrance to the tunnel, just below Dundee High Kirk on Kinghorne Road. (Date and author of photograph unknown). The OS map shows the line of the tunnel.
More information on the Dundee - Newtyle railway can be found here.
After reading AB's log I did a wee bit of digging and found Ghiribizzo's original cache page as mentioned by AB, which has loads of really interesting information on it. here.
