A construção do túnel da lagoa das Sete Cidades permitiu controlar o nível máximo da água da lagoa. Procurava resolver-se o problema das cheias que, por diversas vezes, inundaram as Sete Cidades. Uma destas cheias ocorreu no Inverno de 1921, ano em que as águas chegaram a subir cerca de 5 m. As obras do túnel iniciaram-se a 1 de Outubro de 1930 em direcção à grota do Alqueive. A 11 de Março de 1935 foi iniciada a perfuração pelo lado dos Mosteiros. As duas frentes de trabalho encontraram-se no 27 de Maio de 1937. O túnel das Sete Cidades, tem uma extensão de 1200m. A obra foi inaugurada a 30 de Dezembro de 1937 e é uma das mais notáveis obras de engenharia do início do século XX nos Açores.
Curiosidade: Durante a escavação do túnel foi encontrado um galho de cedro-do-mato que depois de analisado soube-se que tinha cerca de 4000 anos. Poderá ter sido do tempo em que desapareceu a lendária Atlântida. (http://museucarlosmachado.azores.gov.pt/cedrodomato)
The construction of the tunnel of the Lagoa (lake) das Sete Cidades was projected to control the maximum level of the lake in order to solve the flooding that for several times flooded Sete Cidades. One of these floods occurred during the winter of 1921, when the level of the waters reached 5 meters high. The work started in October the 1st 1930 towards the Alqueive’s creek and by March 11th 1935 the drilling coming from Mosteiros started. In May the 27th 1937 the workers reached each other in the center and in the same year, December the 31st, the tunnel was inaugurated. The tunnel has a length of 1200m and is one of the most remarkable engineering construction in the beginning of the XX century, in the Azores.
Facts: During the drilling of the tunnel it was found a branch of "Cedro-doMato" (Cedar) which was then analyzed and found that it had over 4000 years. It is believed that it may be from the time when the legendary Atlantida disappeared. (http://museucarlosmachado.azores.gov.pt/cedrodomato)
