Geocache Description:

Chevron hyphen-minus hyphen-minus hyphen-minus Chevron octothorpe three

Chevrons are also know as angle brackets.  The first one is the opened angle bracket and the second is the closed angle bracket.  Sometime the closed angle bracket is used by itself to denote greater then and the opened angle bracket is used to denote less then.  In comic books, the angle brackets are used to mark dialogue that has been translated from another language.

The one character Hypen-minus or sometimes called the en dash was a compromise in the early days of the fixed width typerwritters. The hypen  is  used to join words and to separate  syllables of a single word. The use of hyphens is called hyphenation. The hyphen should not be confused with dashes, which are longer and have different uses.  The minus sign can be used to represent subtraction or a negative number in mathematics.  It can also be used as a qualifer such as a B- grade is less then a B grade.  It can also qualify the absence of something such as O- blood does not have the Rh factor present.

Octothorpe has many different names:  Pound sign when dealing with weight, Number sign when it pretains to numbers such as telephone number or the sharp sign when connected with music.
