U.S.S. Milwaukee Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

hidegoseek: I don't know if a muggle took the cache or if it just got buried during some Tsunami. I need to look for a new hiding spot. [:(]

Geocache Description:

In December 1916, the Navy submarine H-3 thought that smoke emanating from the Hammond Lumber Mill was coming from its mother ship, the Cheyenne. In heavy fog it ran aground on the beach. The Navy sent the 426-foot-long, 10,000-ton U.S.S. Milwaukee to pull the H-3 off the beach, but it too ran aground and the crew of 438 had to be rescued. The Mercer-Fraser Company pulled the submarine across the dunes to Humboldt Bay, but the wreck Milwaukee remained and was decommissioned in March 1917. In the intervening months the Navy made regular visits to remove records, equipment and supplies. Commercial salvors built a pier from Samoa Beach to the ship and recovered her guns and other heavy items. In November 1918 the wreck cracked in two and was eventually sold in August 1919.
