Did you know…

The ancestors of crocodiles were already established when dinosaurs started to appear.  Their lineage goes back 230 million years!

Physically, the snout  and color are two of the simplest ways to distinguish between the alligator and crocodile.  Crocodiles have long, narrow V-shaped snouts and are typically an olive brown hue.  Alligators have wider U-shaped snouts and are usually darker, almost a black appearance.  Also, crocodiles give you a toothy grin when their snouts are shut, as their fourth tooth on each side of the lower jaw sticks up over the upper lip.

Crocodiles are better adapted to living in seawater while alligators strongly favor freshwater marshes and lakes.

They can swim up to 20 mph and run up to 11 mph and hold their breath for up to an hour.  Their teeth are specialized for spearing so neither family bothers to chew its food, they swallow large chunks or the entire animal whole.  If that isn't scary enough, they have incredibly powerful senses to detect their prey -- sight, sound and smell.
