Dia 24 - A Surpresa
 O comboio ia deixar a estação de Alaabad e Mr. Fogg pagou ao Parsi o salário conforme o combinado, nem um farthing a mais, o que surpreendeu um pouco Passepartout que sabia quanto seu patrão devia à dedicação do guia. O Parsi tinha, com efeito, arriscado voluntariamente sua vida no caso de Pillaji e se, mais tarde, os índianos viessem a capturá-lo, dificilmente escaparia de sua vingança.
Restava também a questão de Kiouni. Que fariam com um elefante comprado tão caro?
Mas Phileas Fogg já tinha tomado uma decisão.
— Parsi, disse ao guia, tu foste serviçal e dedicado. Paguei teu serviço, mas não tua dedicação. Queres este elefante? É teu.
Os olhos do guia brilharam.
— É uma fortuna que Vossa Honra me dá! exclamou.
— Aceita, guia, respondeu Mr. Fogg, e serei ainda teu devedor.
Alguns instantes depois Phileas Fogg, Sir Francis Cromarty, Passepartout e Mrs. Aouda estavam instalados num confortável vagão e corriam a todo o vapor para Benares. Oitenta milhas, no máximo, separam esta cidade de Alaabad, e elas foram vencidas em duas horas.
Durante o trajeto a jovem voltou completamente a si. Qual foi a sua surpresa ao ver que estava num comboio, naquele compartimento, com roupas europeias, entre viajantes completamente desconhecidos!
Imediatamente os seus companheiros lhe deram todos os cuidados e o general de brigada contou tudo o que aconteceu. Insistiu na dedicação de Phileas Fogg, que não tinha hesitado em arriscar a vida para a salvar, e no desenlace da aventura, devido à audaciosa imaginação de Passepartout. Mr. Fogg deixou-o falar, sem pronunciar uma palavra. Passepartout, todo envergonhado, repetia que “aquilo não foi nada!”
Mrs. Aouda agradeceu aos seus salvadores mais com as suas lágrimas do que com as suas palavras. Depois, dirigindo o seu olhar para aquela terra indiana onde tantos perigos ainda a esperavam, estremeceu de terror.
Phileas Fogg compreendeu o que se passava no espírito de Mrs. Aouda e, para a tranquilizar, ofereceu-se para a conduzir a Hong Kong, onde poderia permanecer até que o caso fosse esquecido.

Day 24 - The Surprise
 The train was leaving Alaabad and Mr. Fogg paid to the Parsi the salary as agreed, not a farthing more, which surprised Passepartout who knew how much his master owes to the dedication of the guide. The Parsi had indeed willingly risked his life in Pillaji case and if later the Indians went to capture him, hardly he would escape to their revenge.
Also remained the question of Kiouni. What to do with an elephant bought so expensive?
But Phileas Fogg had already taken a decision.
- Parsi, he said to the guide, you have been serviceable and devoted. I paid for your service but not for your dedication. Would you like to have this elephant? It's yours.
The guide's eyes sparkled.
- It is a fortune that Your Honor gives me! exclaimed.
- Accept, guide, replied Mr. Fogg, and I am still your debtor.
A moment later Phileas Fogg, Sir Francis Cromarty, Passepartout and Aouda had settled into a comfortable car and ran at full speed to Benares. Eighty miles at most separate this city from Alaabad, and they were travelled in two hours.
Along the way the young woman returned to life completely. What was her surprise seeing that train and that compartment, with European clothes, among completely unknown travelers.
Immediately his companions gave her every care and Brigadier General told everything that happened. He emphasized the dedication of Phileas Fogg, who had not hesitated to risk his life to save her, and the end of the adventure due to the audacious imagination of Passepartout. Mr. Fogg left him talking, without saying a word. Passepartout, all embarrassed, kept saying "that was nothing!"
Aouda thanked his rescuers more with tears than with her words. Then, directing his gaze to that Indian land where so many dangers still waited, shivered with terror.
Phileas Fogg understood what was passing in Aouda spirit and, to reassure her, he offered to drive her to Hong Kong, where she could remain until the case was forgotten .
