Willow Mill Park is an 18 acre municipal park nestled alongside the Conodoguinet Creek that is perhaps best known for the amusement park that once occupied this area. The amusement park opened in 1937. It was completely destroyed by Hurricane Agnes in 1972, but was rebuilt and expanded the following year. Some rides featured were the Red Streaker; a sit down wooden roller coaster, the Radar; a double-wheeled ferris wheel, bumper cars, a carousel, and other kiddie rides. Sadly, the park closed in 1989. It was later purchased by Silver Springs Township. During your visit to the park, if you look around you will be able to see a few pieces of nostalgia remain visible. I believe one of the picnic pavilions is still the original stucture that housed the bumper cars. For some really cool pictures of the park in it's heyday, visit the SS Township Facebook page and go to photos/albums/Willow Mill Amusement Park. You don't need an account to view it, you can also use a search engine and type in 'Willow Mill Amusement Park Facebook' and it should pop up.
Today, Willow Mill is a beautiful and well maintained public park that provides a wonderful opportunity for boating, fishing, hiking & birding. Additionally, the park has a 9 hole disc golf course (another hobby of mine!), gardens, protected wetlands, a Veteran's Memorial, RC racetrack, picnic pavilions (one equipt with electrical outlets), grills, portable restrooms, and ample parking. Dogs on a leash are permitted. Hours are from sunrise to sunset. Please follow posted rules, and NO NIGHT CACHING!
Thank you to Jeff Williams of Silver Springs Township Parks & Recreation for permission to place a cache here. Congrats to Lisalil on the FTF!
