Geocache Description:

Engdal is the first village you enter in Halsa kommune when entering from the north (east) and the last one you see before leaving Halsa municipality and Møre and Romsdal county when heading north towards Trondheim or Kyrksæterøra. Engdal has some spectacular farm areas that you can see if you drive off E39 and up the valley.

Engdal har faktisk en familiedrevet kveitefarm. Det er ganske spesielt, selv i en oppdrettskommune som Halsa. Tettstedet Engdal er ellers preget av gårdsdrift. Da det ikke var veier her forholdt denne delen av Halsa seg til stedder som Aure og faktisk lenger ut i havet som Tustna og Smøla. I tillegg er folk her mer orientert mot Trøndelag og Vinjeøra (som er i Hemne, Sør-Trøndelag). Dialekten og kanskje noe av kulturen her (og i Rodal) er kanskje, i et regionalt perspektiv, ganske annerledes enn den du finner på andre siden av Halsa kommune. Engdal er et flott sted med en god del fritidshus. Skal man nyte disse stedene skikkelig, er det dog viktig at man tar turen opp i dal-sidene og ser mer enn bare E39.

Engdal, like Rodal, was a part of Aure municipality of the other side of the Vinje fjord. The Engdal and Rodal post office was centralized to Engdal, and people living in Rodal had to walk across the mountain between the two villages to get the post. It is said that they tooks turns doing the hike and it being your turn was a good thing, because it meant an accepted excuse to get off work.

Today Engdal and Rodal are very small villages, but active and proud, as their contribution to "Bygdakampen 2013" shows. Bygdakampen is a friendly competition between villages in Halsa to show off their qualities.

A Halibut farm that you can see in the Vinje fjord, from Engdal, is somewhat rare as most fish farms do Cod or Salmon. Otherwise, most commercial activities in Engdal is related to land farming.

Halsa

Halsa has it's pluses and minuses. Great nature. Beautiful scenery. Excellent hiking possibilities. Easy access to the main road along the Western coast (E39). Still, population is declining. Urbanization has hit Halsa harder than many other municipalities, even though people leaving for the cities is a problem in many rural areas in Norway.

Different areas of Halsa have very different identities. Valsøyfjord is an old industrial area and used to be the largest industrial centre in Møre & Romsdal county. Here, people from all over the world used to come to find work. The labour movement was very strong. Traditional boat building still stands strong here.
The other side of the Municipality (Halsa and Halsanaustan) was more proned to farming the land, land ownership and running timber industries. The labour movement was, therefore, not very strong here. One can still sense "remains" of that difference today.

Halsa is not spectacular at first glance (besides the scenery), but it is a very "honest" piece of rural Norway. And, as with most things, once you get to know the place, it actually is quite spectacular and has a very interesting history.

I therefore found making a kind of Halsa themed series was a fun cache project. There are/will be caches with short snippets of local history all over the municipality. At least one for each "grend" (village) and noticable site. If you are new to Norway, this example of a typical Norwegian municipality, everyday rural life and varied scenery, could make for an interesting experience and sightseeing.

Halsa has 1595 inhabitants and 300 sq. km. land mass, whereof 8 sq. km. is water. Halsa is also known for being the place where the world famous Killer whale "Keiko" swam to and stayed until he died some years ago.

The "Halsa" chapter in every cache decription will be identical.
