57. Den Grooten Oorlog : Slag aan de Yser :

In 2014 wordt het begin van WO I herdacht. Bij deze gelegenheid zullen wij een nieuwe reeks caches uitbrengen, dit langs de volledige frontlijn, van Nieuwpoort tot Mesen.
Ze worden onderverdeeld in verschillende 'veldslagen'. Elke veldslag bestaat uit 8 gebeurtenissen, met aan het eind een bonus. Iedere reeks bestaat uit korte multi's of tradi's.
Het is de bedoeling dat met een tussenperiode van 1 à 2 maanden een volgende veldslag 'uitgevochten' wordt.
Denk er aan : ook al ligt een gedenkteken of begraafplaats schijnbaar midden de velden, er steeds een zeer goed onderhouden pad naartoe loopt.
De caches liggen nergens verborgen op de begraafplaatsen.. De antwoorden op de vragen moeten wel regelmatig op de begraafplaatsen gezocht worden. Respecteer de stilte, aub. Maak je ook het napluizen van de aanwezige registers eigen. Je zal ze hier en daar nodig hebben.
Gelieve GEEN gebruik te maken van stickers in de logboekjes. Breng aub eigen schijfgerief mee en noteer vooral de aanwezige codes. Je zal ze nog nodig hebben !

Historiek
Het bunkertje aan de Groigne (Oudekapelle) is op zijn minst een curieus geval te noemen. De constructie bestaat in feite uit 2 delen : een bakstenen en een betonnen gedeelte. Ze ligt zo'n 3 kilometer ten noordwesten van de IJzer, waar tijdens de oorlog de Belgische 1ste linie ingericht was.
De betonnen constructie is zonder twijfel Belgisch, want inscripties verraden de eenheid die het bouwwerk neergepoot hebben: "7/A - 3e Bie Ob - 1918". De 3de batterij Houwitzers (105mm) behoorde tot het 7de artillerieregiment, op zijn beurt onderdeel van de Belgische 1ste legerdivisie. Deze legerdivisie was in de sector van Nieuwkapelle aanwezig tussen 21 december 1917 tot 23 maart 1918 en tussen 17 april 1918 tot 28 juni 1918. In die maanden moet het betonnen gedeelte geconstrueerd zijn.
Het bakstenen gedeelte aan de zuidwestkant van de constructie verhult echter een heel merkwaardig detail: een spitse hoefijzerboog waarin Arabische inscripties gekerfd zijn. Pas recent konden de tekens ontcijferd worden. De vrije vertaling van de tekens zou luiden: " Er is geen grotere god dan Allah. Als je in Allah gelooft, zal je zegevieren zoals de zege over Tadmoor en Namar " De tekst wijst op een tijdelijke aanwezigheid van Arabische manschappen, die 'als onderdanen' deel uitmaakten van het Franse leger en dus ook in de omgeving van Oudekapelle gekantonneerd werden. Een unieke getuige dus van het bijzonder internationale karakter van de 'grooten oorlog' in de Westhoek.

2014 is the year we commemorate the start of World War I. At this occasion we publish a series of new caches, alongside the Belgian frontline, from Nieuwpoort to Mesen.
They are subdivided in different “battles”. Each battle consists of 8 events, with at the end a bonus. Each series consists of short multi’s or tradi’s.
Remember: although a memorial or cemetery may be located in the middle of the fields, a well maintained walking path leads always to the site.
The caches are never hidden at the cemeteries. The answers to the questions are mostly found at the cemeteries. Please keep your silence. Also accustom yourself to explore the registers.
Please DO NOT USE stickers in the logbooks. Bring along your own pen and note the present codes. You’ll need them.

History
The small bunker (Oudekapelle) is at least very peculiar. The structure actually consists of two parts: a brick and a concrete section. It lies approximately 3 kilometres northwest of the Yser, where during World War 1 the Belgian front line was.
The concrete structure is definitely Belgian; inscriptions betray the unity that built this section:”7/A-3rdBieOb-1918”. The 3rd Battery Howitzers belonged to the 7th Artillery Regiment, part of the Belgian 1st Army division. This division was stationed in the military section Nieuwkapelle between December 21, 1917 and March 23, 1918 and between April 17 and June 28, 1918. During these months the concrete section was constructed.
The brick section on the southwest side of the structure conceals a curious detail: a pointed horseshoe arch with Arabic inscription carved. Only recently the characters were deciphered. The free translation of the inscription is: “There is no greater god than Allah. If you believe in Allah, you will triumph like the victory over Tadmoor and Namar”. The text points to a temporary presence of Arab men who “like subjects” were part of the French army. They were stationed near Oudekapelle. An unique witness of the international character of “the Great War” in Flanders.
