The name Nswatugi is derived from the Karanga word sveuka & means " The Place of Jumbing". Other derivations are Nswatuke, Nswatuka & Nswetuka. According to Kalanga traditions Mwali/ Mwari (God) once jumped from his dwelling place at Njelele over the top of Nswatugi Hill touching the ground with one foot and then landing on top of a hill called Khalanyoni.
Nswatugi Cave contains beautiful friezes of giraffes, elephants and kudu, dating back 10000-6000 years ago. They are some of the finest in the country.
Best way to access the caves is from Maleme over the dam wall, follow the dirt road and signs. I would suggest leaving the Sedan at home. Either Hike (long) or take something with good road clearance like a donkey cart
