Een compact disc, meestal cd genoemd, is een optische schijf die gebruikt kan worden voor de opslag van gegevens. Oorspronkelijk werd de schrijf voor de opslag van muziek gebruikt, als vervanger van de grammofoonplaat van vinyl. Een paar jaar na de introductie werd deze echter ook voor opslag van andersoortige gegevens ingezet zoals data en video. Het cd-systeem is gezamenlijk ontwikkeld door Philips en Sony/CBS.
A compact disc, generally referred to as CD, is an optical disc which can be used for the storage of data. In juni 1985 werd de cd-rom geïntroduceerd zodat ook computerdata kon worden geperst op de schijfjes. Vijf jaar later kwam de cd-recordable, zodat het ook mogelijk werd zelf informatie op een cd te zetten, het zogenaamde "branden" van een cd.

De cd is in verschillende fysieke formaten beschikbaar, waarbij een diameter van 12cm de meest gebruikelijke is. In het midden van de schijf is een gat gemaakt waar de spil van de cd-speler doorheen gaat. Dit gat is 15mm in doorsnee, gelijk aan de doorsnee van een dubbeltje. Volgens Joop Sinjou, de Nederlandse ontwikkelaar die hier verantwoordelijk voor is, was dit de snelste beslissing tijdens de ontwikkelingsfase: "Ik legde een dubbeltje op tafel en dat werd de maat."
The CD is available in a variety of physical sizes, wherein a diameter of 12cm is the most common. In the center of the disc is a hole where the pivot of the CD player is going through. The size of this hole is 15mm, equal to the diameter of a “dubbeltje”, a coin worth a tenth of a Dutch guilder, the currency in the Netherlands before the introduction of the Euro. According to Joop Sinjou, the Dutch developer who is responsible for this, this was the quickest decision made during the development: "I put a dubbeltje on the table and that was the size."
Wanneer een cd als muziekschijf wordt gebruikt volgens de door Philips en Sony vastgelegde standaard (het zogenaamde Red Book) past er maximaal 74 minuten aan stereogeluid op. Gebruikt als opslag voor computers, past op een cd-rom 650 MB aan gegevens. Grotere opslagformaten zijn er ook. Schijven van 700 MB waar 80 minuten muziek op past zijn tegenwoordig de standaard.
When a CD is used as a music disc in the manner prescribed by Philips and Sony standard (the so-called Red Book), it can fit up to 74 minutes of stereo sound. Intussen is het gebruik van de cd op zijn retour. Andere gegevensdragers als DVD / Blu-ray of flash geheugen (USB stick / SD kaart) hebben de plek van de cd ingenomen.
