The driveway just up the hill, to the left, leads to a 40-acre piece of land, with a house and other buildings. Until recently, a member of our Santa Cruz chapter of the Military Officers Association of America, who owns the land, would invite all the chapter members to her place each year for a potluck. She provided the strawberry shortcake. After a time of camaraderie and lunch, everyone was invited to go into the field and pick as many strawberries as they desired. Most everyone did. What fun! Especially since we could choose the best, the juiciest and the plumiest. If nothing else, it made me appreciate the field workers who do this work for a living. Pickin' a few boxes of berries on a nice, sunny afternoon is one thing. Having to do it every day would be, no doubt very laborious.
