The cache is as near as I am allowed to place it, because the Martello Tower was in what is now an S S S I. It is not far from the cliff top on which the Tower once stood. It is in rough ground in woods.
You may have wondered about local references to Martello Park and Martello Road in the Canford Cliffs area. Right on the cliff top a tower (or folly) was built in the mid 1850s by Charles Packe. He was the wealthy landowner of the Branksome Towers Estate which extended inland to County Gates, bounded on the west side by Canford Cliffs Road and on the east side by the Hampshire County boundary. At that time Bournemouth was in Hampshire. The tower was about 40 foot high on two floors with an open platform on which could be mounted a cannon. A photograph taken in the mid 1870s shows the tower looking very battered. However, it lasted throughout the First World War and eventually fell into the sea. Nothing now remains. The cache is a small clip top box with a log book.
Roadside parking very close.
It is not suitable for wheelchairs. Please replace with adequate cover.
