There are two intentions of this cache. First one is to pay a tribute to Italian Alpini and the second intention is to encourage the travelers to visit Cinque Terre National Park.
During family vacation we stopped by in Levanto, Liguria. I was quite surprised finding a beautiful monument commemorating Alpini’s effort probably during WWII. Alpini are the elite mountain warfare military corps of the Italian Army. Established in 1872, the Alpini are the oldest active mountain infantry in the world. Their original mission was to protect Italy's northern mountain border with France and Austria. From the time of foundation they have been fighting in all major worldwide conflicts. Currently, the Alpini are deployed in Afghanistan.
I have searched for detailed information of the origin of this statue but no luck so far. I will appreciate for any further data regarding this place.
Levanto is also a perfect gateway to visit Cinque Terre National Park (Parco Nazionale delle Cinque Terre). The Cinque Terre became a Unesco World Heritage site in 1997, which includes a protected marine area, and became a national park (Parco Nazionale delle Cinque Terre) in 1999. Placed along 18km of saw-toothed cliffs between Levanto and La Spezia, the Cinque Terre is one of Italy’s treasures. These five small fisherman’s villages – Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore – are cut off by mountains choked with olive groves and dry-stone-walled vineyards, where farmers have survived a living over the centuries. You can enjoy here fantastic sightseeing while hiking or swimming. The best (in my opinion) way to see all five cities is by train.
The Geocache location is situated in a park close to Alpini’s monument. It contains only logbook. Bring your own pen. Enjoy.
Importatnt notice: Dear Geocachers - the cache is a film canister and unfortunately the lid is gone. In order to protect it I kindly ask you for your assistance. If you plan to visit it and by the chance you may have one not needed lid, please bring it and put on the top of the cache. For sure it will extend the life of it.
