In 2013, Florida reached a significant milestone, the 500th anniversary of Juan Ponce de León's arrival on Florida's east coast. What makes this anniversary so unique is that Ponce de León's convoy of explorers was the first group of Europeans to document such a landing and give a name to Florida, La Florida. 2013 marks 500 years of history and diverse cultural heritage in Florida – a claim no other state in America can make.

During the mid-1850s John Newton, a minister and teacher, settled in the area west of what is known today as Fort Walton Beach. Reverend Newton founded the first school, which also doubled as a church during the Civil War. Newton established the first post office in the Mary Esther community October 10, 1871. Mary Esther is rumored to have been named after Newton's two daugheters, Mary and Esther, ages 8 and 6 at the time. Mary Esther was later incorporated as a city in 1946.

On March 29, 2014 there was a strong thunderstorm that moved through Mary Ester. It was strong enogh to blow tall pine trees over and snap them like twigs. At least four of them fell on the roof of the library causing extensive damage. The event, while not very historic to us, will likely be marked in the history in the future.
