The original walls and first prison block buildings to incarcerate prisoners were built in 1862. E BLOCK was the first completed solitary block in 1862. Many other facilities were added during the next 60 odd years.

H Block that housed The Gallows was completed in 1934. There was a small courtyard near the entrance of the block, that was walled off from the rest of the prison. This allowed a half hour exercise time to prisoners each day, but effectively cut them off from communicating with the other prisoners incarcerated in the rest of the prison

It is believed that 4 prisoners met their ultimate fate in that first year. Research is still ongoing concerning the number of guilty prisoners who were sentenced to H Block, and how many of them died by means of the gallows that was housed in this block. It is known that many political prisoners were kept in this block, isolated from other prisoners for fear that they would incite insurrection among the non-political prisoners. It is known that many prisoners guilty of crimes of treason, murder, rape, and aggravated assault were sentenced to death. Although many sentences were commuted to life imprisonment and the prisoners transferred to other maximum security facilities (mostly to Barberton in the then Eastern Transvaal), many guilty of the aforementioned crimes died on the gallows in H Block.
