Legend of Jacobs' Death
This park is named for the neighboring tributary of the Toms River. Many know that Jakes Branch itself was named for colonial settler Jacob Jacobs, who built a saw mill on the tributary in 1761. What most people do not know, however, is the legend of Jacob Jacobs' mysterious death.
One of Jacobs' mill workers discovered his severely-beaten body. It is rumored that, on his last breath, Jacobs spoke three words of a sentence he never finished: "Beware the orange . . ."
No one knows for certain the meaning of Jacobs' final warning. But one crazed local believes that it refers to the glowing orange eyes of an evil spirit which lethally attacked Jacobs. And that evil spirit still lurks these woods to protect this northern corner of the Pine Barrens from the destructive nature of humans.
